The purpose of this website or blog is to offer perspectives on the environment, science and natural history with the aim of helping to improve understanding and countering regressive and harmful ideologies that are adversely affecting progress on important challenges affecting life on earth. Poll results published by the Pew Research Center, Gallup, and others show the alarming state of the general public’s knowledge about science. The website will also post occasionally about other topics of interest, such as books, current events, and music.
My name is Steve and I am an environmental scientist that has spent much time in the bush—in water and on land—across the lower 48, Alaska, and Canada. I have studied ecological habitats and communities, and species of small mammals (bats and rodents), birds, fish, invertebrates, and plants. My graduate studies concentrated on ecosystem science, community ecology, and the spread of invasive plant species in the western US.
The problem in society is not kids not knowing science. The problem is adults not knowing science. They outnumber kids 5 to 1, they wield power, they write legislation. When you have scientifically illiterate adults, you have undermined the very fabric of what makes a nation wealthy and strong.
